IsraBox - Music is Life! Leadbelly - Rough Guide To Leadbelly Lucky Thompson played it on soprano sax on his "Lucky Strikes" album. Our audio excerpts start right on the melody. Tad sets up the melody with his own stop and go introduction with the rhythm section before handing it over to drummer Kenny Washington to set up the melody.

Tad hears the tempo a little faster ca. On tenor, he also doesn't hear it as light as Lucky heard it for soprano, so Kenny Washington is not playing sticks on the hi-hat for the melody.

Please note that the lead sheets under each album cover are identical. Don Sickler: "This is the first recording of Prey-Loot we've found after Lucky's original recording. Drummer Kenny Washington was the first one to tell me about saxophonist Tad Shull, and that was probably around the time of this recording.

Tad has spent a lot of time studying Lucky, and he's also recorded two of Lucky's beautiful ballads. You may send this item to up to five recipients. The name field is required. Cal Tjader had been an admirer of Stan Getz ever since the latter first shot to national jazz fame as the tenor saxophone star of the Woody Herman band and Stan had heard Cal and played with him at various sessions since Cal first went out as a member of the Dave Brubeck Trio.

However, recording Stan with the Tjader group wasn't easy. They never seemed to be in the same part of the country at the same time. It wasn't until Stan came to the Black Hawk to fulfill a short engagement, during a period when Cal was laying off prior to reforming his group, that it was possible to work it out.

Getz' group at the Black Hawk featured two young jazz players who were totally unknown then: bassist Scotty LaFaro and drummer Billy Higgins.

Aug 10,  · Mark Turner, by contrast, is the sax player who sounds equally at home playing rugged postbop jazz with Tom Harrell and Johnathan Blake, improvised chamber music with the Fly trio and the Billy Hart Quartet, or late-night ballads with swing-era stylist Tad Shull. What may sound like an oil-and-water combo is anything but/5(11).

In today’s terms, the sextet on The Cal Tjader-Stan Getz Sextet was a hybrid made up of two players from vibraphonist Cal Tjader’s regular working group at the time - pianist Vince Guaraldi and guitarist Eddie Duran - and two musicians from the quartet then on tour with tenor saxophonist Stan Getz - bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Billy.
